Solutions For Chemical Manufacturers And Formulators In Pakistan
As a chemical raw material supplier in Pakistan since 1994, Khan Associates imports phosphonates, dispersants, biocides, surfactants, chelating agents, polymerisation initiators, cellulose ethers and coagulant actives, and supplies them by the drum or IBC from Lahore and Karachi to formulators and chemical manufacturers.
The buyers are water treatment chemical houses, detergent and cleaning product makers, paint and construction chemical producers, agri-input formulators and polymer processors, and the requirement they share is a specification that holds from shipment to shipment. An active that drifts in concentration shows up months later as a complaint about your product, not about the drum it came in. Send us the grade you use now for an availability check and a quotation.

We do not sell you a formulation. We do not do contract blending, we do not toll manufacture, and we will not hand over someone else’s recipe. If you want a ready-made branded treatment programme to resell, that is a different conversation and a different supplier. Our part is to supply the components, tell you how a given active behaves under the conditions you have described, and point you at the published chemistry rather than at marketing claims.
Grades and active percentages are listed with our water treatment chemicals and raw materials range; the sections below cover how to choose between them.
Documentation, Batch Traceability And Supply Continuity
For a formulator, paperwork is part of the product. Your customer’s auditor will ask where the active came from, and a raw material without a technical data sheet, a certificate of analysis and a traceable batch number creates a gap in your own quality file.
Everything we supply comes through the official manufacturer channel with technical data sheets and batch documentation. We handle import and clearing ourselves rather than routing through a third party, which is what makes supply continuity possible on repeat grades. Incoming material is also checked in our own quality control laboratory before it is released, and we represent twelve international manufacturers across chemicals and instruments, which gives a second source to discuss when a single grade is under pressure. What we will not do is quote a lead time or a price on a web page, because both move with shipping, LC conditions and exchange rate, and a number published today would be misleading by the time you read it.
Choosing Between Phosphonates: HEDP, ATMP, PBTC And DTPMPA
Most Pakistani water treatment formulators build their antiscalant around a phosphonate, and the most common costly mistake is treating them as interchangeable on price per kilogram. They are not. Each has an operating envelope, and the published formulation literature is consistent on where those envelopes sit.
HEDP (1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, CAS 2809-21-4) is the general-purpose workhorse. It chelates calcium, iron, copper and zinc, holds up well against chlorine and oxidising conditions, and resists hydrolysis at high pH. Work on inhibitor blend performance indicates HEDP requires lower dosages at lower temperatures and lower saturation levels, which is where most general cooling duty sits.
ATMP (amino trimethylene phosphonic acid) works through chelation, threshold inhibition and crystal lattice distortion, and gives better antiscale performance than polyphosphates. The same blend work indicates ATMP gains its advantage as temperature and saturation stress increase, which is the opposite direction from HEDP. That is why an HEDP/ATMP blend often looks synergistic when what is really happening is that each active is covering a different part of the operating range.
PBTC (2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid) carries carboxyl groups alongside the phosphonate and tolerates chlorine well, which makes it the usual choice where a programme has to survive aggressive oxidising biocide dosing that would degrade other phosphonates.
DTPMPA (diethylene triamine penta methylene phosphonic acid) brings higher chelation capacity for heavy metal and high-hardness duty, and is commonly used where iron sequestration matters.
Salt form is a formulation decision in its own right. Acid-form phosphonates give maximum active concentration and suit low-pH formulations; the sodium salts, such as HEDP.Na2 and HEDP.Na4, are easier to handle in neutral and alkaline blends and in solid or granular products. Getting this wrong shows up as a blend that separates, gels or drops out on storage rather than as a performance failure in the field.
We supply this range through Koye Chemical, whose phosphonate line covers HEDP, ATMP, PBTC and HDTMPA along with the phosphonate salts and polycarboxylic acid scale inhibitors.
Polymers And Dispersants
A phosphonate alone controls scale nucleation. It does not keep suspended matter dispersed, and it does not handle the iron and clay load that most Pakistani source waters carry. That is the polymer’s job, and it is the part of a formulation most often under-specified.
The families in routine use are polyacrylic acid and its sodium salt, maleic acid and acrylic acid copolymers, acrylic acid and AMPS terpolymers, hydrolysed polymaleic anhydride, and polycarboxylic acid dispersants. Selection is driven by what you are dispersing rather than by scale type: AMPS-containing terpolymers are generally chosen where iron tolerance and calcium-phosphate stabilisation matter, while simpler polyacrylates are adequate for straightforward calcium carbonate duty at lower cost.
For formulators blending coagulant and flocculant products rather than antiscalants, the actives are different again: polyaluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate and ferric sulphate on the inorganic side, and polyacrylamide, PolyDADMAC and polyamine on the polymer side. We supply these through Bluwat, and Japanese powder and emulsion polyacrylamide grades through MT AquaPolymer, whose ARONFLOC and ACCOFLOC lines run to over a hundred grades across nonionic, anionic and cationic types.
Corrosion Inhibitors And Azoles
Yellow metal protection is a small line item with an outsized effect on whether a cooling programme is accepted by an end user with copper or brass in the system. Benzotriazole and the sodium salt of tolyltriazole are the standard actives, and both are supplied as raw material rather than as finished product. Nitrite-based inhibitors cover closed-loop duty where an oxidising programme is not in use.
The formulation constraint worth naming: azoles and strong oxidising biocides consume each other. A programme that dumps chlorine or bromine into a system carrying benzotriazole will lose azole and lose copper protection with it, which is a formulation and dosing-sequence problem rather than a product quality problem. Formulators who understand this build it into their dosing instructions, and it is worth raising before your customer raises it as a complaint.
Biocides And Preservation Chemistry
Biocide selection for a formulator splits into two separate questions that often get conflated.
The first is what the finished programme does in the customer’s system: oxidising chemistry such as TCCA and sodium chlorite for routine disinfection, and non-oxidising actives such as THPS, DBNPA, isothiazolinones and quaternary ammonium compounds for biofilm control where an oxidiser alone cannot penetrate. These rotate in practice, because a single biocide used continuously selects for resistance.
The second is preserving your own product in the drum. A water-based blend sitting in a Pakistani warehouse through summer is a growth medium unless it is preserved, and the preservative has to be compatible with everything else in the formulation. Isothiazolinone systems are the common answer at low inclusion levels.
Koye supplies both sides of this, including THPS, DBNPA, TCCA, sodium chlorite, isothiazolinones, and specialty microbicides such as TCMTB and sodium pyrithione, alongside sodium gluconate as a chelating and set-retarding agent.
Raw Materials Beyond Water Treatment
Not every chemical manufacturer in Pakistan is in the water treatment business. Through Nouryon, formed from the former AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals business, we supply raw materials into several other formulation sectors.
Polymer, PVC And Composites Producers
Trigonox and Perkadox organic peroxides act as polymerisation initiators and crosslinking agents for PVC production, polyester resin curing and elastomer crosslinking. Initiator grade selection is tied to your reactor temperature profile and half-life requirement, not simply to activity, which is why grade substitution on price is a poor idea in this category specifically.
Paint, Coatings And Construction Chemicals
Bermocoll cellulose ethers provide thickening, water retention and open time in water-based decorative paints, dry-mix mortars, tile adhesives and skim coats. Viscosity band is the specification that matters, and it is chosen against your application method and working time. Levasil colloidal silica and Expancel expandable microspheres cover performance coatings and lightweight filler duty.
Agri-Input And Fertiliser Blenders
Dissolvine chelating agents and chelated zinc, iron and manganese grades keep micronutrients plant-available in high-pH calcareous soils, which describes most Pakistani farmland. For a foliar or granular blender, the chelate form is the whole product claim, because unchelated micronutrient in an alkaline soil is largely wasted.
Detergent And Home Care Manufacturers
Surfactants and chelating agents for cleaning formulations that have to perform in the hard water common across the country. Phosphonates appear here too, functioning as builders and peroxide bleach stabilisers rather than as scale inhibitors.
Verifying What Arrives: Incoming Raw Material QC
This is where most small and mid-sized Pakistani formulators are exposed. A drum arrives with a certificate, goes into a blend, and the first indication that the active content was low is a customer complaining that the programme stopped working three months later. By then you have shipped several batches.
The routine checks are not exotic. Density and specific gravity are the fastest indication that a phosphonate or polymer solution is not at declared concentration, and refractive index serves the same purpose for many solution actives. Both are minutes of work per drum and catch gross dilution immediately. Rudolph Research DDM automatic density meters and J Series automatic refractometers are built for exactly this raw material and product QC duty in chemical laboratories, with electronic temperature control so results do not move with ambient temperature, which matters in a Karachi or Multan QC room in June. Rudolph Research density meters and refractometers are the instruments for this.
Beyond that, a formulation laboratory typically needs photometric determination of calcium hardness, iron and phosphate for both raw material checks and performance work, which is standard HACH spectrophotometer and reagent territory. Where you need to confirm anion content, chloride levels in a low-chloride grade, or run more demanding identity work, Wayeal ion chromatography, gas chromatography, HPLC and atomic absorption platforms cover it at a cost that makes the capability realistic for a mid-sized formulator. See Wayeal for the platforms.
Two further pieces belong in a formulation laboratory specifically. Jar testing apparatus for anyone blending coagulant products, since a coagulant formulation that has not been tested against real water is an untested product; VELP Scientifica flocculators cover this. And controlled-temperature ovens and water baths for accelerated stability storage and static scale inhibition testing, which is how you find out whether a blend separates at 50 °C before your customer does. Zenithlab supplies that layer, and the rest of a formulation QC laboratory can be equipped alongside it.
Your Own Plant’s Effluent Is A Separate Problem
Worth separating clearly, because these are usually different people with different budgets. Everything above concerns what you buy to put into your product. This section concerns what leaves your site.
A blending and formulation operation generates a modest effluent volume compared with a textile mill or a tannery, but it is chemically awkward: drum and reactor wash-water carrying surfactant, residual polymer, phosphonate and sometimes biocide, with a COD that is poorly biodegradable and a variable pH from batch changeovers. Volume is low, load is spiky, and NEQS limits apply regardless of how small the discharge is.
Practically, the first control is segregating strong first-rinse water from dilute later rinses so that the concentrated fraction can be handled as a small batch rather than diluted into a stream you then have to treat entirely. Beyond that, coagulation and flocculation followed by settling handles most of what remains, using the same coagulant and polymer families described above, applied here as effluent treatment chemistry rather than as raw material. A residual biocide load can inhibit a biological stage, so if you dose non-oxidising biocides at scale, that is worth knowing before you build one.
A note on jar testing: if you are a formulator, you already own this capability and can run the work yourself. That is one of the few situations where we would not offer to do it for you.
Formulators In Karachi And Punjab
Most of Pakistan’s chemical blending and formulation capacity sits in two places: the industrial estates of Karachi, including SITE, Korangi and Port Qasim, where the bulk of imported raw material arrives; and the Lahore, Sheikhupura and Faisalabad belt in Punjab, where detergent, paint, construction chemical and agri-input producers work close to their markets.
Karachi formulators are supplied and supported from our chemical supply office in Karachi, and Punjab formulators through our Lahore office, based in the Quaid-e-Azam Industrial Estate. For repeat grades in either city, sharing a monthly consumption forecast helps us plan import cycles so that your production does not depend on a single shipment arriving on time. The same applies to summer: water-based blends and preservative systems behave differently in a warehouse at 45 °C, so it is worth confirming the preservative and salt form before the hot months rather than after the first returned drum.

Formulator FAQs
Can I Substitute ATMP For HEDP In My Existing Antiscalant Formulation?
Not on a like-for-like basis. The two actives have different operating envelopes: HEDP tends to need lower dosage at lower temperature and saturation, while ATMP performs better as thermal and saturation stress rise. A straight swap at the same dosage will usually underperform somewhere in the range. Reformulate and test rather than substitute.
Do You Supply Acid-Form Phosphonates Or Sodium Salts?
Both. Acid form gives maximum active concentration and suits low-pH formulations; sodium salts such as HEDP.Na2 and HEDP.Na4 are easier to work with in neutral and alkaline blends and in solid products. Tell us your target formulation pH and physical form and we will confirm which grade fits.
Will You Develop A Formulation For Us?
No. We supply raw materials and the instruments to test with, and we will discuss how an active behaves under conditions you describe. Formulation development, and the intellectual property in it, stays yours.
Why Does My Blend Separate Or Gel In Storage?
Most often a salt form or pH compatibility issue rather than a contaminated raw material. Acid-form phosphonate in an alkaline blend, an incompatible polymer and surfactant pairing, or a formulation sitting outside its stable pH window are the common causes. Accelerated storage testing in a controlled oven will reproduce it in days instead of months.
How Do I Check That An Incoming Drum Is At Declared Concentration?
Density or specific gravity is the fastest practical check and catches gross dilution immediately, with refractive index serving the same role for many solution actives. For a definitive active assay you need the manufacturer’s specified method, which is usually titrimetric or chromatographic depending on the active.
Do You Supply Small Trial Quantities For Formulation Development?
Discuss it with us directly. Availability depends on the grade and on current stock position, so we confirm it per enquiry rather than publish a blanket policy.
Are Your Raw Materials Suitable For Detergent And Cleaning Product Formulation?
Yes for several families. Phosphonates function as builders and peroxide bleach stabilisers in detergent formulations, and surfactants and chelating agents are supplied for cleaning products formulated to work in hard water. Tell us the finished product type and we will confirm which grades apply.
We Blend Coagulants Rather Than Antiscalants. Do You Supply Those Actives Too?
Yes. Polyaluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate, ferric sulphate, polyacrylamide in all three charge types, PolyDADMAC and polyamine are supplied as raw materials, and we can supply the jar testing apparatus alongside them.
Request A Grade Check Or Quotation
Tell us the actives and grades you buy, your consumption and packing, and what your finished product has to do. We will confirm availability, provide a formal quotation with full technical documentation, and give you a straight answer on whether a grade change will get you where you want to go. Send the details through the enquiry form, or call the Lahore or Karachi office.
